Tutorial #1

I've never done an icon tutorial before, so my apologies in advance, but here's a quick tutorial for the coloring of that icon (which is a pretty popular coloring style at the moment, from what I've seen). Oh, this is done in PSP7 (though I'm sure you could do something similar in any program). I won't use any images because it's pretty simple. If you'd prefer I use images, let me know.

Choose the photo you want to use and crop it and shrink it.

Copy the image and paste it twice as two new layers. Set the bottom of the two to "Screen" and the top to "Soft Light."

Go to Layers | Add Raster Layer and add a layer, choosing "Exclusion" for the blend mode. As for the opacity, it depends on the image you're using and how much blue you want in it. I think I set mine to 86%.

Using the flood fill tool, fill that layer with a navy blue.

Add another layer, this time choosing "Multiply" for the blend mode. Fill that layer with a tan color.

Add yet another layer (blend mode "Normal").

On that layer, make a circle with the selection tool with feather at 13. Fill that selection with a lightish pink color. Move that circle until it's placed where you want it to be.

Arrange the layers so that from bottom to top, the order is: The original image (Normal), the feathered circle (Normal), a copy of the original image (Screen), navy blue (Exclusion - somewhere around 70 or 80%), tan (Multiply), and a copy of the original image (Soft Light).

Ta-da!

I have no idea how confusing that was, so if you need any clarification, let me know.
